WLOS Membership

Wimbledon Light Opera Society is an amateur theatre society, based in Wimbledon and performing in South West London.  Membership costs £40 per year, and performing members are required to pay an additional ‘Show Levy’ which varies from show to show.  Some discounts are available on a case by case basis by applying to the committee.

We are always looking for new talent, on stage or off.  There are lots of roles to fill – backstage, front of house, arranging publicity or social events.  Previous experience is not essential, but enthusiasm and commitment are.  Performing membership is by audition, where you can perform a song of your choice for a panel of committee members and may also be asked to act a brief improvised scene and do some movement.  We provide an accompanist and recommend you bring some sheet music for them to accompany you if you have it, otherwise that you sing a capella.  Choose a song that you know and are confident performing to us.  Our shows are often over-subscribed, but as a current member you are always given the opportunity to perform with us.

Please note that if your membership lapses due to non-payment you will be required to undertake an audition to rejoin the society.  This is something which members will hopefully see as an opportunity to showcase their talents.

We perform two shows a year – usually May/June and mid November or early December.  As soon as we finish one, we start rehearsing for the next one. Our twice yearly performances take place at The Secombe Theatre (Sutton), The London Oratory School Arts Centre, Merton Hall or occasionally the New Wimbledon Theatre.

Rehearsals are held on Tuesday evenings from 7.45pm to 10.00pm at the Village Hall, Lingfield Road, Wimbledon and Sunday evenings for the final month before each production (plus Thursday evenings for Principals – and occasionally, closer to the show, the chorus may also be required on Thursday evenings).

Supporter Memberships – Become a WLOS Friend

The costs of achieving the high standards we strive for continue to increase year on year. Box Office income and cast fees no longer cover the expense of producing a fully staged musical and we rely on the generosity of our friends and supporters to help us continue to put on great shows..

You can support WLOS, join in our social activities and get priority information about productions by becoming a WLOS Friend. Friend’s memberships start for a minimum donation of £20 a year.
