Pirates of Penzance
We are disappointed to let you know that the committee and creative team have made the very difficult and sad decision to cancel The Pirates of Penzance. After three rounds of auditions, we are still unable to cast all of the parts or enough ensemble to make the show viable. We have talked to both existing members and other amdram contacts to see if postponing the show until after the busy holiday period would help and we can’t seem to generate the required commitment and interest. We know that many people will be disappointed and frustrated and we’re sorry and sad that we weren’t able to find a way to make this happen.
We discussed three main options before reaching our decision
– Postponing the start of the show to allow for holidays – we were still not confident enough that we’d be able to secure the cast required
– Continuing with a concert version of the show – we would still need to secure the rest of the principal roles and we couldn’t make the finances stack up
– Continuing as is and hoping we would be able to add the missing cast as we go – this was considered too great a risk as we would incur greater financial liability as well as potentially be wasting the existing cast and creative team’s time.
This has been a very difficult decision and we have thought long and hard about the options to continue with the show and the implications of cancelling it. We hope that our members and supporters understand the why we have come to this conclusion.
Other performing opportunities
We’re now working on filling the ‘gap’ with a series of workshops and classes on Tuesday evenings during September and October including the possibility of performing the Pirates Megamix at the WLOScars on October 6th.
We also have the Edwardian Music Hall coming up at the Village Hall 29th November to 1st December. This show commemorates 100 years since the end of the First World War and the 160th Anniversary of the Village Club. Auditions for this are early September and full details will be coming out soon.
Next year we have our 90th anniversary celebration cabaret in May followed by The Wizard of Oz at New Wimbledon Theatre in October.
Thank you to the creative team and production team who worked really hard to create their vision and prepare the auditions. And thank you to those who did audition for the show and for the time and effort you gave to the workshops and auditions.
