Music and Lyrics by Cole Porter
SYNOPSIS AND CAST
Set in the swankier parts of New England in the Summer of 1938 (shades of the legendary Kennedy enclave at Hyannis Port). America’s self-made aristocracy live and play in the idyllic seaside setting of huge estates and magnificent yachts.
Tracy (aka Sam – just to confuse things) is about to enter into her second marriage with the worthy but deadly dull George Kittredge who, unlike the rest of Tracy’s acquaintances, has worked his way up through the coal business from humble origins. Tracy’s first short-lived marriage to neighbour and childhood sweetheart Dexter, appears to have been poisoned by the demon drink. Dexter sailed away in their very own love boat, the “True Love” and coincidentally, just happens to sail back on the weekend of Tracy’s wedding to George.
The other unexpected arrivals are journalists (Mike) and photographer (Liz) for Spy Magazine whom Dexter has ‘invited’ to cover the wedding. What their boss really wants them to do is dish the dirt on Tracy’s father, Seth Lord, and his dalliance with an ‘exotic dancer’, Tina Mara.
Tracy and her mother are anxious to make the family look as normal as possible so, when Uncle Willie stumbles in, they pretend he is Seth and when Seth unexpectedly turns up he has to play the role of Uncle Willie. As it is obvious that Mr and Mrs Lord are still fond of each other, it appears to the uninitiated that she is carrying on a flirtation with her brother-in-law.
Tracy’s little sister, Dinah, adores Dexter and is prepared to go to any lengths to disrupt Tracy’s wedding to George. Mike (unaware that he’s really in love with Liz and she with him) takes an alcoholically accentuated shine to Tracy, despite having arrived in Oyster Bay clinging manfully to his lifelong Bolshevik convictions and prepared to pour scorn on the idle rich.
The combination of champagne and moonlight unleash the wild child in Tracy – much to the delight of Mike and the disgust of the straight-laced George. Mating calls are heard throughout the moonlit garden. But just who is up to what and with whom? All will be revealed! And even if Tracy and George are not destined to be together well, it’s a pity to waste a good wedding.
